Çavuşin is easy to miss — it sits on the main road between Göreme and Avanos, and most visitors pass through without stopping. That's a mistake. The old village of Çavuşin, largely abandoned in the 1960s after rockfalls made the ancient cave dwellings unsafe, contains the Church of John the Baptist, one of the oldest cave churches in Cappadocia, dating to the 5th century. Above the modern village, the empty facade of the ancient settlement rises in layers — cave doors and windows cut into the tuff, now open to the sky.
The modern village below is alive and functioning: a traditional Cappadocia settlement with a small square, a tea house, and a handful of cave hotels. Pigeon Valley — so named for the thousands of pigeon houses carved into the cliff faces, where birds were kept to produce fertilizer for the gardens — runs directly below Çavuşin. The valley is a popular walking route connecting Çavuşin to Uçhisar.
Getting to Çavuşin
There is no airport in Çavuşin. Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is approximately 72–75 km away, about 60–75 minutes by transfer. Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is 40–42 km, about 35–50 minutes. A Kayseri Airport to Çavuşin transfer costs €15/person shared or €90 private. From Nevşehir, a private transfer to Çavuşin costs €80 for up to 5 passengers — the closer and cheaper option.
Çavuşin sits on the main road between Göreme and Avanos, so all shared shuttles on that route pass through directly. This makes it one of the more straightforward destinations to reach by shared transfer — the driver doesn't need to divert.
The old village
The abandoned upper village of Çavuşin is freely accessible on foot. A path leads up from the main road into the empty cave facades. The Church of John the Baptist — also called the Great Pigeon House — contains frescoes from the 5th century, some of the earliest Christian art in Cappadocia. The church is carved directly into the cliff face and is best reached in morning light. No entrance fee, though the path is steep and requires reasonable footwear.
Staying in Çavuşin
Çavuşin has a handful of small cave hotels, mostly family-run and considerably less expensive than equivalent properties in Göreme or Ürgüp. If you want a genuine Cappadocia cave hotel experience without the tourist infrastructure, Çavuşin delivers. Göreme is 6 km south — 10 minutes by taxi. The village has one or two simple restaurants; most guests eat in Göreme for dinner.
The Çavuşin walking circuit
One of the best walks in Cappadocia runs from Çavuşin through Pigeon Valley to Uçhisar, approximately 7 km and 2–3 hours. The path descends from the main road into the valley, follows the cliff bases through the fairy chimney formations, and climbs to the Uçhisar Castle at the end. No guide necessary; the path is clear and signposted. Return to Çavuşin by taxi from Uçhisar (10 minutes, inexpensive).
