Avanos is Cappadocia's pottery capital, a town where the craft has been practiced continuously for over 3,000 years. Situated on the banks of the Kızılırmak — the Red River and the longest river in Turkey — Avanos has a character distinct from the cave hotel villages of Göreme and Ürgüp. It's quieter, more local, and less visited by mass tourism, while still being within easy reach of all Cappadocia's main attractions.
The red clay from the Kızılırmak riverbanks is what defines Avanos. Pottery workshops line the streets — not the tourist-facing souvenir kind, but working ateliers where you can watch potters at the wheel and buy pieces made the same way as they were in the Hittite period. Chez Galip, a famous underground pottery workshop, has become an institution: thousands of locks of hair sent by visitors from around the world hang from the ceiling in a cave below the workshop. Strange and unforgettable.
Getting to Avanos from the airports
There is no airport in Avanos. The nearest airports are Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) at 65–70 km (approximately 50–65 minutes) and Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) at 38–45 km (approximately 35–50 minutes). A Kayseri Airport to Avanos transfer takes around 60 minutes and costs €15/person by shared shuttle or €90 by private Mercedes Vito. From Nevşehir, the Nevşehir Airport to Avanos transfer takes 35–50 minutes and costs €80 by private vehicle — meaningfully closer and cheaper.
What to do in Avanos
The pottery workshops are the main draw, but Avanos has more to offer. The weekly Saturday market fills the town center with local produce, textiles, and crafts — a genuine Turkish bazaar rather than a tourist market. The Kızılırmak riverfront has restaurants and cafes with views across to the red cliffs. In the evenings, Avanos is quieter than Göreme, with a handful of wine bars and restaurants serving Cappadocia's regional cuisine.
From Avanos, the northern Cappadocia sites are easily accessible. Zelve Open Air Museum is 7 km away — a complex of cave churches, monasteries, and cave dwellings that predates Göreme's famous open air museum and receives fewer visitors. Paşabağı Monk's Valley, with its extraordinary triple-headed fairy chimneys, is 6 km from Avanos. These are less crowded than the main Göreme sites and worth the detour.
Avanos accommodation
Avanos has a small but good range of accommodation — mostly smaller boutique hotels and pensions rather than the large cave hotel estates of Ürgüp. The riverside hotels have pleasant terrace views. For luxury cave hotel experiences, Göreme and Ürgüp are better choices; Avanos is better for an authentic local stay at a reasonable price.
Avanos as a base
Staying in Avanos makes sense if you want to avoid the tourist concentration of Göreme, have a rental car, or specifically want to be near the northern sites (Zelve, Paşabağı). Göreme is 15 km south, Ürgüp is 25 km, and most Cappadocia attractions are within 30 minutes by car. The shared shuttle transfer from Kayseri or Nevşehir airport covers Avanos directly — no need to transfer in Göreme.
